Lighting up time
Last Wednesday the Arran Sports Field, officially opened by the Queen last August, had another sort of opening. This one was to formally switch on the floodlights on the astroturf to allow all interested parties to inspect the pavilion. Although raining, junior hockey training was postponed until the guests had assembled and then Councillor John Sillars turned on the lights by remote control from inside the pavilion. Guests watched from a distance, the high lights slowly coming to life to reveal the youngsters at practice and to signify final readiness of a project which has been almost nine years in coming to fruition. Except for a few objections to the lights from those living nearby, there is a very real pride in the project and the opportunities it is now giving to Arran’s youngsters.
