CRAZINESS AND CONTROVERSY IN THE WORLD OF ATHLETICS
THE athletics world collectively held its head in its hands as Alex Schwazer returned from a four-year drugs ban to win the 50km race at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome on Sunday.
The Italian failed a drug test on the eve of London 2012 and confessed to buying EPO and administering it to himself.
To add insult to injury, the shamed race walker beat the Australian Jared Tallent into second in Rome. Tallent is a fervent anti-drugs campaigner who was complaining about Russian cheats long before the nation was banned from international athletics.
