I was interested to hear President Obama say, during his recent UK visit, that David Cameron was “ahead of the curve on LGBT issues”. I thought that strange, considering that prior to Cameron’s tenure, Labour had pushed through all the pro-LGBT laws (equal age of consent, the scrapping of Section 28, the reversing of the Armed Forces ban, bringing in adoption, the Equality Act, the Gender Recognition Act), with the majority of Tory MPs opposing each one of those at every opportunity.
I presume Obama was referring to Cameron’s support for gay marriage — even then with a slim majority of his Tory MPs (including his equalities minister) voting against it.
