BUILDING WITH OAK FRAME
An appealing timber technique combining natural character with modern performance
When asked to picture their ideal house, many people will instantly envisage something that’s packed with charm and wow-factor.Robust, natural and beautiful, oak framing can deliver that in spades. And while its roots lie firmly in heritage and craftsmanship, today’s oak builds tick all the right boxes in terms of modern performance, too.
How it works
The basics of oak framing have stayed the same for centuries, albeit with significant updates to achieve modern performance standards. The key ingredient is the structural skeleton, which is crafted using recently-felled green oak, hand-carved or machined and test-assembled prior to delivery to ensure it will slot together neatly and quickly on site. The posts and beams are connected either with pegged mortice and tenon joints, which tighten as the wood matures, or with stainless steel rods and bolts.
