Sadiq Khan has asked for extra powers to improve air quality in the capital after its pollution level was raised to high. The mayor’s proposals include a ban on burning solid fuel in London’s most affected areas. Mr Khan has also called for tougher controls in the market, allowing for only low-emission versions of trendy stoves to be sold. However, the recommendations were met with criticism from industry experts who believe the use of sustainably sourced timber fuels has helped UK households become greener. “A blanket ban on woodburners makes little sense,” says Phil Wood, Contura country manager. “Using one of the modern, clean burning, Ecodesign-ready stoves can reduce emissions by up to 90%.” Ecodesign is the Europe-wide emissions regulation scheme for stoves which is due to be introduced in 2022.
