Could custom build be the right approach for you?
Self build homes account for 7%-10% of new housing in England every year, according to the Planning Portal (planningportal.co.uk), which is around 12,000 homes. In almost all other developed countries, the proportion is much higher, making this country an outlier. For example, in Germany, self build homes make up over 50% of all new build houses.
It seems evident to those of us involved in the sector that self and custom build should become a normal and accepted route to home ownership. There is real irony in the fact that the one area where consumers in this country have the least choice is the one that represents the single biggest purchase made in most people’s lifetime. Instead, identikit estates of houses, often of questionable quality and built by the major developers, is the offering forced upon most people.
