Campbeltown’s community radio station has received £25,000 to widen its reach to south Kintyre and Southend. The station has benefited from the Scottish and Southern Electricity Network’s (SSEN) Resilient Communities Fund.
Argyll FM is an independent community radio station, run entirely by dedicated volunteers, which broadcasts mainly locally produced programmes 24 hours a day. During the storms of 2013, the radio station helped to keep the community up-to-date with status reports on the progress of power restoration.
Colin Middleton, chairman of Argyll FM, said: ‘Argyll FM Community Radio and the people of South Kintyre would like to thank SSEN for giving us the funds to provide a local radio service into a remote rural peninsula. ‘This part of Kintyre has poor TV, radio and mobile phone coverage.
‘In March 2013 it was completely cut off from the rest of Scotland when a freak snow storm brought down power and telecoms lines.
‘This resulted in the road being closed for several days with no information being able to reach the residents. ‘If this were to happen again Argyll FM would be able to supply updates to that area thanks to the funding from SSEN for the new transmitter site.’
