TIP OF THE FORTNIGHT
Make PDFgear read scanned documents aloud
Thanks for your Workshop on PDFgear Scan (Issue 719, page 38), which is wonderfully easy to use. I’ve installed the Android app (www. snipca.com/56123) on my Google Pixel phone and have been using it to scan documents such as receipts, bills and membership forms.
You explained how to scan and share documents, but you can also have them read aloud to you, which I find incredibly useful. Open a document then tap More at the bottom right followed by ‘Text to Speech’ (see screenshot). Tap the ‘1x’ circle in the the bottom-right corner to change reading speed (though I think the default ‘1x’ is perfect).
However, the default voice is a bit robotic – this is called Lily. Tap the bottom-left ‘L’ to try others (three male, three female). My favourite is Ella. Tap ‘Save’ to confirm. I couldn’t bear to listen to it for too long – it’s not like an audiobook. But for short documents it’s ideal, and great for anyone with visual impairments.
