”I don’t agree that, when an individual makes a choice in life, it should be taken away from them in death”

Right now in England, the government is holding a consultation on organ and tissue donation. Due to continue until March, the consultation aims to find out what we, the general public, think about proposed changes in which people would be considered an organ donor unless they had “opted out” while alive. Under current rules in England, a person who has died can only be a donor if they agreed to it while living. A model of “presumed consent” was introduced in Wales in 2015, and the Scottish government announced its intention to introduce similar legislation last year. But what could these proposed changes mean for someone waiting on a donor organ in England?

Kerigh Palmer, 41, was diagnosed with kidney failure 10 years ago, but when she contracted a chest infection just two days after her wedding, the illness took away the little kidney function that she had left.
