JT LEROY
Directed by Justin Kelly
If you’re unfamiliar with the true story on which this film is based, prepare to have your mind completely blown. In the early 2000s, queer writer Laura Albert published several books under the pseudonym of JT LeRoy. When they became runaway bestsellers, Laura roped in shy Savannah Knoop to pose as the invented literary persona. They got away with it for six, celeb-studded years with A-listers like Winona Ryder and Courtney Love swooning over JT’s star power. Now Savannah – yes, the same Savannah – has cowritten a riveting movie based on their experiences. Kristen Stewart is perfectly cast in the titular role and Laura Dern hilariously embodies author Laura Albert. Plus KStew gets it on with Diane Kruger and it’s hella hot. Not only is this film extremely entertaining, it’s also an illuminating investigation of gender, identity and creativity, which will stay with you for weeks after you’ve watched it.
