Spanish Conquest

Take the bull by the horns into a fabled land of explorers, armadas, Moorish palaces, “mini haute cuisine” and broodingly hot sexy men. Whatever it is you’re after, Spain serves it up in spades. Story and photography by Riley-McFarlane Photography
Mr Gay Spain 2015, Jesus Martin Márquez, wears the Spanish flag.

YOU COULD TRAVEL around Spain for weeks, if not months, and still only scratch the surface. And what a surface to scratch! The men are passionate and simply ooze sensuality, centuries of history have moulded a sophisticated culture, but it’s a contemporary society that now celebrates over ten years of marriage equality. Spain’s empire once stretched across Europe to the Americas, Africa and even into Asia. Today, the nation is comprised of a number of autonomous states, each with their own identity, culture and, in some instances, language. With world class dining, legendary parties, and a whopping 44 World Heritage sites, a memorable Spanish experience awaits.

The Basque Country

This area located in the north of the country is renowned for its beaches, natural resources, avant-garde architecture and a cuisine that is considered one of the world’s best. On this front, pintxos (pronounced ‘pinchos’) are the Basque cousins of Spanish tapas and have been referred to as “mini morsels of haute cuisine”. They can be simple or sophisticated and are generally eaten with a drink while standing around socialising. You do this while on a txikiteo – a pinxto bar crawl. Most pintxo bars generally have one or two specialties at which they excel, hence the need for a bar crawl. Knowing which pintxo to choose is just as important as knowing which bar to visit. Visitors can avoid this dilemma by hiring a private guide. Without a local to show you around though, look for a bar littered with napkins on the floor.
