Who’s your favourite companion? It probably depends on your age. Everyone from Ian and Barbara in the 1960s, right up to the Thirteenth Doctor’s ‘fam’ of Graham, Ryan and Yaz, have their admirers. For many viewers the choice is shaped by the Doctor Who of their formative years. That’s why a long tenure in the TARDIS, or appearing alongside multiple Doctors, leads to some characters having a larger impact, not just on Doctor Who fan culture, but on the programme’s wider audience.
One character who left an indelible mark is Sarah Jane Smith. Freelance journalist Sarah travelled with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker’s Doctors between 1973 and 1976, actress Elisabeth Sladen enjoying strong on-screen partnerships with both. Multiple returns for her character followed, at least one every decade, before she starred in her own spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-10). When asked to define Sarah’s role in the 1993 documentary 30 Years in the TARDIS, Sladen said: “I am the audience. I am that person watching and saying, ‘Oh, why’s he done that?’” As for Sarah’s motivation, she claimed that “The Doctor was my best friend… Wouldn’t you do anything to help your best friend?”
