In the 1970s, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and his loyal UNIT officers were an integral part of Doctor Who, becoming some of the Doctor’s closest allies during his exile on Earth and often making appearances thereafter. But by the time of 1989’s Battlefield, the familiar faces had moved on, and UNIT was led by a Brigadier Bambera.
“Alan Barnes [script editor] came to me and said, ‘I want you to introduce a brand-new era of UNIT’,” recalls writer Scott Handcock. “It comes at a point between the Lethbridge-Stewart era and the Bambera era, where other people have stepped up and are in charge.”
