Feature by ALAN BARNES
The Doctor (Patrick Troughton) sees his new face for the first time in Episode One of The Power of the Daleks (1966).
The ‘post-regeneration’ story is a sub-genre of its own. The Power of the Daleks (1966), set in the immediate aftermath of the Doctor’s first (known) physical rearrangement, established one essential moment – the new Doctor checking out their Mirror Image. Reprised in Spearhead from Space (1970), when the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) asked Liz Shaw (Caroline John) to lend him her compact, the moment has reoccurred over and over again.
