If the Doctor Who Christmas Special has often felt like a metaphor for Christmas itself –a noisy, colourful, sugary head-rush; the TV equivalent of eating a whole box of Quality Street in one go – then Eve of the Daleks finds the show starting the new year on something of a health kick. It’s the lean, low-fat, thrifty version of Doctor Who, made with whatever change was left down the back of the sofa after they’d maxed out the credit card on blowing up the universe in Flux.
