Much of the packaging created by toy company Product Enterprise was adorned with vivid and stylised illustrations by graphic designer Graham Humphreys.

Gloucester-born Graham Humphreys is best known as the last of our great film poster artists, working in the classic tradition. His portfolio famously includes the British posters for The Evil Dead (1982), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Mike Leigh’s Life is Sweet (1990). Two years later he splattered a bloodbath of red paint across the stark British poster for Tarantino’s début Reservoir Dogs.

A self-confessed horror fan, it comes as no surprise to learn that Graham has enjoyed being frightened since he was a youngster. “Doctor Who was a big influence on me when I was a child,” he says. “I was three years old when the first episode went out, in 1963, but I’ve got dim memories of it. I was fascinated by the Daleks and just kept drawing them all the time.

About Doctor Who Magazine

In 1964 Dalekmania led to the birth of Doctor Who licensing, and it’s been with us ever since. In 2017 the popularity, and ingenuity, of these products continues unabated. This is the surprising story of Doctor Who toys and games – told by the people who make, sell and collect them.
