It might seem like a strange thing to say, given how often they feature in the pages of DWM, but the influence of Doctor Who’s directors is consistently underrated. Where would the series be without paradigm-shifting stories such as The War Games (1969), Genesis of the Daleks (1975), Earthshock (1982) and The Parting of the Ways (2005)? Going all the way back to 1963, what sort of reception would Doctor Who have received if director Waris Hussein hadn’t conducted such a radical overhaul of its first episode?
