Australian cinema is not exactly synonymous with stereotypically gothic films such as Dracula and Nosferatu. But there is a lineage traceable from these films to our desolate outback and vast coastlines, making Australian gothic well worth exploring.
In our version of the genre, castles and fog are traded for red dirt, heat haze and cicadas. Mystery, repression and the uncanny seep out of these unforgiving conditions, exposing the darker edges of the national psyche — from colonial violence to toxic masculinity and isolation.
