It’s only natural for some modules to gain a reputation for being particularly good at certain tasks. A common reason for this, in Eurorack at least, is down to efficiency. A module needs to not just sound good (if it generates sound) but needs to do so in a manner which is fun and intuitive, and without taking up more valuable hp than it’s worth. There are a handful of modules that we believe represent these attributes and are wonderfully suited to generative music. While some, like Ochd, are narrow in focus, others, such as Marbles take up more space but offer a lot of versatility. In fact Marbles could probably do with an extra mention as, although not small, it does a huge amount with minimal fuss, from random pattern, pitch and trigger generation, to quantisation and offers options like coin toss probability generation, clock division and its repeatable random history. It really is a fantastic module which could be the beating heart of many generative patches, matched in versatility and power only by Pamela’s New Workout, which offers similar output but with a different workflow.
