US multi-instrumentalist Spencer Zahn has followed up two decades of intensive touring as a session bassist by releasing impressive solo albums that blend his jazz influences with subtle electronic textures. Whilst 2018’s People Of The Dawn and 2019’s When We Were Both Brand New were solo synth experiments, the New York-based artist has got together a close bunch of collaborators for his new album, Sunday Painter. As a result, the record feels richer than previous albums. Its entirely instrumental songs meander through gently undulating waves of jazz, electronic, neo-classical, Americana and improv pop. The record welcomes the listener into a wide-open space where each sound is allowed to envelop you. Sunday Painter feels warm, cosy and personal as you sink into its lush layers of horns, gentle, drifting piano keys, subtle, glowing melodies, hazy guitar lines, deep, indulgent bass and quiet percussion. A beautiful and emotive album full of thoughtfulness and peace, Sunday Painter is Spencer Zahn’s most accomplished record to date.
