A Day In May: The Play

This month as part of the celebrations around the third anniversary of the passing of the marriage referendum, the Olympia Theatre will stage A Day In May, a drama-documentary adapted by Colin Murphy from the book of the same name by former RTÉ journalist, Charlie Bird (pictured right), which recounts the personal stories around the passing of the marriage referendum,

“ It was the voices of ordinary people that played a signi cant role in turning public opinion.

Inspired by the campaign and its result, Bird travelled around the country meeting LGBT+ people. In all he conducted 90 interviews over 150 hours, 50 of which made it into the original publication.

“The vast majority of people in the book are not well-known campaigners,” Bird says. “They’re what I call the ordinary people. It was the voices of those ordinary people that played a significant role in turning public opinion.”
