In 2023 the Corps commissioned a review into how senior Royal Marines Officers’ dress can be more closely aligned with the Royal Navy. Several changes were recommended and subsequently approved by the Palace; these will be introduced in two phases.
The first phase will see officers at the rank of Colonel and above adopting a cloth Globe & Laurel cap badge for both beret and peaked cap, returning ‘RM’ to rank slides and using ‘RM’ as post nominals this phase will be complete by 1 January 2025.
Phase two sees officers at the rank of Lt Col and above removing Mounted Order as a form of dress and for Colonels and above removing gorget patches. Full direction and guidance for phase two will be provided by 1 April 2025, with a nine month ‘period of grace’ for enactment.
