Experience history first-hand with our pick of outdoor events – from a medieval festival to a steam railway celebration

Portsoy in Bannf hosts the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival on 22 and 23 June, with boats, music, crafts, food & drink and entertainment, centred on Portsoy’s harbour.

Cheer on the crews in competitive racing, watch skilled craft workers weave, knit and sculpt, and enjoy local food & drink as you watch the boats sail in and out of the harbour.

Father’s Day (16 June) is celebrated at Bo’Ness Railway with steam train rides, the chance to explore Scotland’s largest railway museum and a display of vintage vehicles. Walk along the visitor trail, pre-book an afternoon tea on a steam train and enjoy food & drink in the station buffet.

Tarbet Castle Trust is hosting a community archaeology dig: Our Castle of Kings, throughout May and June, exploring the ruins of medieval Tarbet castle.
