In 2010 when my beloved horse DC died, after calling my family members to break the news of my loss, the first person I shared my devastating news with in person was a teacher who was a fellow horse owner. I knew he would understand exactly what I was going through because he’s owned several horses throughout the course of his life. He didn’t say much, but his hug and “I’m sorry” communicated empathy. I wasn’t sure how to bring it up to my non-horsey coworkers, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Depending on your situation in life, whether you’re a student or stay-at-home mom or have an office job, you might encounter the non-horsey folks in your life in person before you see your horse friends after the loss of your horse. Don’t be shy about it.
