The International Afar Research Expedition was led by palaeoanthropologists Donald Johanson and Maurice Taieb in the Hadar region of Ethiopia. The aim was to search for early hominin fossils.
Over the next few weeks, the team carefully excavated the remaining fossils. They found 40 per cent of a hominin skeleton – these discoveries usually only included a few bones.
