COMPOSTING QUERY
Dear HIW,
I want to start composting at home. Do you have any tips? Jonathan James
To make your compost heap, you’ll need a good mixture of equal parts green and brown organic matter. Green materials, like grass and leafy plants, are high in nitrogen, while brown materials, such as twigs, paper and cardboard, provide carbon. You’ll need to mix and turn over your compost every few days so that oxygen can enter the mixture. Microorganisms such as bacteria need this for the decomposition process. You should use a thermometer to check the compost’s temperature. The ideal is between 49 and 71 degrees Celsius. If it’s too hot, add more brown materials, and if it’s too cold add more greens. Keep adding water to the compost to keep its moisture content similar to a damp sponge and build your compost heap in a dry and shady location.
