GOING EVEN HIGHER THAN BURJ KHALIFA

Work has begun on a new tower that will dwarf the current record holder. The Burj Khalifa’s chief architect Adrian Smith is working on a superscraper that will outdo his previous work. Building work on the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia began on 1 April 2013, and after it stalled in 2018, construction resumed in January 2025. When it’s completed by 2028, it will stand in excess of 1,000 metres. While this is less than the mile that was originally proposed, it will still be an impressive feat of engineering. Though it uses the Burj Khalifa’s threelegged base configuration, it doesn’t have the same stepped pattern. Instead, each wing is a sloped tower that gradually tapers upwards, terminating at different heights. The tapering wings have an aerodynamic shape, and wind tunnel tests suggest that this is an extremely effective design for minimising wind loads. The tower’s foundations will be 200 metres deep.
