Death of a Species

On Tuesday 20th March, 2018, Sudan, the final existing male Northern White Rhino died at the age of 45 years. The species is now extinct. Sudan lived out his life in a sanctuary in Kenya to protect him from slaughter by poachers. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the African elephant, which is being slaughtered by poachers at an estimated one every 25 minutes, is expected to become extinct before 2025. Recently, more than 300 elephants were killed in Zimbabwe when poachers laced the waterholes in Hwange National Park with cyanide. Now global efforts are being made to save this iconic species, with organisations such as Chengeta Wildlife developing increasingly effective strategies to combat the poaching gangs and networks. Although our Scottish government can do little to fight the illegal ivory racket, having no real powers over trade which is reserved to Westminster, nonetheless, Scots are involved in the fight to save the elephants and other endangered species.
