Our experts are here to help with all your questions about Italy. This month, buying on a budget, Gennaro Contaldo’s secrets of cucina povera, and making an Italian Will…

QWe are thinking of buying a property for restoration in Le Marche but on a budget. How much should we budget for? Or would you suggest we look at new properties instead for better value?

A In principle, Le Marche is offering a good and wide range of ready-restored/ new properties as well properties to restore. Properties restored after roughly 2005 are offering especially good value for money. You should, however, ask an independent expert to check the technical and legal status of the property concerned.

But Le Marche has many interesting “ruins” and also some experienced project managers like Marche Property Restorations ( who can help make the buyer’s dream come true. Usually, we advise clients with a limited budget (below €200,000) not to start a full restoration project.

About Italia!

We have a splendid line-up of features to inspire your travels this month: our cover star Lake Maggiore has a wealth of stunning locations to explore, both around its shores and on the lake itself. If you like a good hike, our itinerary around the byways of a small corner of Maremma will defi nitely stretch your legs. For cricket fans we have the extraordinary tale of a most unlikely team – and they are really rather good! We have e-biking in the majestic Dolomites and we meet a 3-star chef there who’s really making a difference. And for culture vultures, we have the story of the rise, fall and rise again of Venice’s aptly-named La Fenice opera house.
