All Saints’ Day is celebrated throughout the Christian world, and in Western Christianity (which includes the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion) it is celebrated on November 1, and has been since the 8th century. In Italy, where it is called Ognissanti, or Tutti i Santi, it is a public holiday. And this year it happens to fall on a Friday, so those members of the congregation who are perhaps not quite as observant as the good monks of Monte Olivetto Maggiore basically get a long weekend.
