Early autumn is traditionally a time of plenty.The harvest is in, our toils rewarded by a cornucopia of plumptious produce with which to fill the larder. Summer vegetables like tomatoes and salads are joined by the first of the winter staples such as leeks, kale and parsnips. If late spring brings us the ‘hungry gap’, autumn celebrates its antithesis: more food than we can possibly eat over the next few weeks.
