Living the American Dream.

If you can dream it, you can do it. Or, at least that is what they say in the United States. The American Dream is the idea that anyone (regardless of birthplace or social status) can become successful. Just think of the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is an Austrian immigrant with imperfect English, and you’ll know what we’re talking about. There are countless stories of people who have worked themselves up from rags to riches. Here are two stories about the American Dream.

Andrew Carnegie arrived in the US in 1848 with a few pennies. But by 1900, he was worth an estimated 600 million dollars. Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1835.

He moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his parents at the age of 13. He started working in a textile mill, earning just $1.20 a week. However, he impressed his supervisor and was offered the opportunity to be a clerk. In 1853, he took a job working for Pennsylvania Railroad’s western division, and learned everything about the railroad industry. While there, he was promoted for his good work. At the same time, he was also earning money from his investments in the oil business.
