Recycle old work
A letter by Kate Rook in the December 2016 issue of Leisure Painter asked if acrylic gesso would obliterate an unwanted water-soluble oil painting. Last summer I also had a canvas board that I wanted to reuse. I applied two heavy coats of acrylic gesso over dry water-soluble oil and when dry a further ground coat of mid-tone Student quality acrylic paint.
A year later, after using the panel as a backing board for acrylic and watercolour papers and a lightweight mounting board for my camera tripod (for painting en plein air), there is no sign of the acrylic gesso or paint layers separating from the surface. Perhaps not definitive proof, but the panel has been flexed, twisted, scrubbed clean with wet rags and is still going strong without any signs of deterioration.
