How to paint boats, buildings, water and reflections

Your reference photograph for this project: the wharves at Fowey in Cornwall

I have often sketched and painted in the Cornish town of Fowey, looking across the river towards Bodinnick (see photograph, left). The writer, Daphne Du Maurier once lived in the white house in the background.

The buildings in this part of the town are fairly unremarkable, being mostly fishermen’s cottages and run-down boathouses, each with their own steps or landing stages on the water. The little group you see here is no more than a simple collection of sheds, knocked together from corrugated iron and pieces of odd timber, but on a sunny day they make a great subject for a textural painting approach. The corrugated roofs are stained with a patina of rust and the timber walls are weathered with different shades of old paint.
