Australia’s Great Ocean Road

The coast of Victoria that runs west from Melbourne is a landscape of wave-scoured cliffs watched by proud lighthouses, but also beach towns with great eateries - as you'll discover along its famous driving route.

SIGHTS

Australian National Surfing Museum £ ( surfworld.com.au; 77 Beach Rd, Surf City Plaza, Torquay)

In this well-curated museum that pays homage to Australian surfing, you'll see Simon Anderson's groundbreaking 1981 thruster, Mark Richard's awesome air-brushed board art collection and Australia's Surfing Hall of Fame. It's full of great memorabilia (including Duke Kahanamoku's wooden longboard), videos and displays on surf culture through the 1960s to the '80s.

Bay of Islands Coastal Park FREE

Past Peterborough (seven miles west of Port Campbell), the lesser-visited Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands both have lookout points of rock stacks and sweeping views comparable to the Twelve Apostles. Both have fantastic coastal walks, and there's a great beach at Crofts Bay.

Bells Beach

The powerful point break at Bells Beach is part of international surfing folklore. When the long right hander is working, it's one of the longest rides in the country, but it's a wave for experienced surfers only.

Cape Nelson Lighthouse ££ ( capenelsonlighthouse.com.au)

Head up to the top of this still-operational lighthouse (c 1884) for fantastic views overlooking the edge of the world. You'll also get shown around the premises while hearing tales of shipwrecks and the history of the area.

Cape Otway Lightstation ££ (lightstation.com; Cape Otway)
