TWO FRIENDS AND I WENT on holiday to the Greek island of Kefallonia with the sole intention of lying by a swimming pool for a week. When we arrived on the island, however, things took a different turn. The villa we had booked turned out to be much more remote than we’d expected. The closest supermarket was a good hour’s walk away – uphill, in a blistering 40°C. When we thought of all the rosé we wanted to buy and drink by the pool, we decided we had really better hire a car. This decision totally transformed our holiday. With the car on our side, the whole of this gorgeous island suddenly became accessible to us. We ended up going on all sorts of jaunts that we hadn't anticipated, encountering everything from singing farmers to secret coves – and it was all thanks to these unexpected expeditions that my friends and I fell in love with Kefallonia.
