Stretching out into the Thames Estuary, the monumental iron and wood construction of Southend Pier is the Big Daddy of all piers - at 1.3 miles, it’s the longest in the world. Standing at its entrance, the sweeping walk can seem daunting. But soon you’re far from land, buffeted by the wind and experiencing the curious sensation of walking high above the waves. About half an hour’s stroll leads to the restored pier head and a café, sun deck and lifeboat station. Hopping aboard the Pier Railway saves the long slog back.
