Quick-fire questions

Can Apple silicon Macs support ECC memory?

> Not as far as anyone knows. Error-correction code (ECC) memory has check bits to detect errors, so needs special hardware controllers to take advantage of that. Apple has always been reluctant to offer ECC memory, as it increases hardware costs and only rarely solves any problems.

How can I tell what caused a kernel panic?

> When your Mac starts up again afterwards, a minute or so after you log back into it, you should see a window containing the panic log, inviting you to send it to Apple. Before doing so, select it all with Cmd+A, copy and paste it into a TextEdit document. Its interpretation is explained at bit.ly/ mac406kernelpanic.

Can a Studio Display fast-charge a MacBook Pro?

> MacBook Pro models from 2021 onwards support fast charging with high-power adaptors and cables. The 14-inch model also supports this when charging from Apple Studio and Pro XDR displays, but power from those displays is insufficient to fast-charge the 16-inch model.

Which Macs have hardware support for AI?

> Intel models don’t have dedicated chips but their graphics hardware accelerates learning using Metal when appropriate. All Apple silicon Macs have excellent in-chip support with Apple’s dedicated Neural Engine, their GPU and matrix co-processors for AI.
