There are many clever
things that smart-home kits can do, but moving music and movies from one device to another without wires is the one that feels most magical. You can stream wirelessly over AirPlay from your iPhone to your Apple TV 4K, group a bunch of HomePods together for a more immersive Apple Music experience, and have different things playing in different places – all controllable via speaking to Siri or from inside the app you’re currently using.
There are plenty of third-party audio and video devices that work with Apple Home and AirPlay, for you to send video to a TV or set-top box or audio to an amp, headphones or speakers. But as you might expect, Apple’s own options tend to offer the best user experience. Setting up a HomePod, combining multiple HomePod minis into a speaker group or streaming to the Apple TV 4K from your iPhone or iPad is easy provided everything’s connected to a reasonably speedy wireless network.
