LAST NIGHT A RECORD CHANGED MY LIFE
Daniel Lanois
The producer, pedal steel player, and pianist drifts into Harold Budd’s The Pearl (1984, Editions EG).
We just did a show in Berlin, and before, someone cue’d up
The Pearl
and played it with a bunch of smoke. It was fantastic, mesmerising. All these people were sprawled on the floor as if they were about to meditate to it. Maybe they were on drugs? Anyway, I was in the dressing room, and I thought, “Oh, that sounds so beautiful. Wait a minute – that’s the Harold Budd record” (which Brian Eno and Lanois produced).
