Desert songs: America (from left) Gerry Beckley, Dan Peek and Dewey Bunnell get reflective, 1970; (right) the trio’s 1971 transatlantic hit A Horse With No Name.
Dewey Bunnell:
My family moved from America to the UK in 1967 when my father was stationed at the US Air Force base at RAF West Ruislip.
Gerry Beckley:
I was born in Texas, but my family moved to the UK within a year, so I grew up near Croydon. When my father became commander at the base in Ruislip, I attended an American high school called London Central. Dewey, Dan [Peek] and I all played music: there was a circle of two or three bands who’d swap members every few months.
