I was 18 and it was the heatwave summer. The tarmac was melting. I was living at my mum and dad’s house in Menlove Gardens in Liverpool. I had these Wharfedale Linton speakers in my bedroom I was very proud of – me and my mates would get stoned and listen to music. Frank Zappa, Beefheart, Tangerine Dream, Faust… then I heard the first Ramones album which, in a way, would have ruined the whole dream.
