Ask a dozen different people what Marillion means to them, and you’ll get a dozen different answers. For some, they’re the freaks in the facepaint who picked up where vintage Genesis left off, keeping the prog flag flying through the early 80s wilderness years. For others, they’re that band who had a massive pop hit with Kayleigh, fronted by the big Scotsman who liked a bevy or two. To some, they’re a band whose second act – as a grown-up, intelligent, criminally under-appreciated rock group – overshadows everything they achieved in their original incarnation. And then there are those who would have it that they’re the ones who helped save the music industry via their groundbreaking and much-copied crowdfunding model. The thing is, Marillion are all of these things and more. Few bands have had such a brilliant, fascinating, often turbulent career. And fewer still have ended up, nearly 40 years down the line, in the position they occupy – a hugely successful self-contained entity with a diehard fanbase, whose future is just as bright as their past. That’s precisely what we’re here to celebrate. In this blockbusting one-off Marillion special, we’ve brought together articles drawn from the archives of Prog and Classic Rock magazines, alongside brand new interviews and a rundown of the 50 greatest Marillion songs as voted for by the people who matter – their fans. And what better way of celebrating a band with two such distinct and different eras than giving you two separate covers for the price of one –one to mark their original, Fish-fronted incarnation, the other to salute their current, long-time line-up featuring Steve Hogarth. From classic albums to the stories behind their iconic artwork, it’s all in here. Enjoy…
