All smiles back in December 1995 were these ladies, who were members of the Oban branch of the Royal British Legion, as they served soup and and sandwiches.
Last week we published a photograph of Oban High School football team from 1958, with one man described as ‘unknown’. Reader Robert Kennedy, who now lives in Inverness, was in touch to say: ‘I was delighted to see this picture which was actually taken four years before my birth but I wanted to furnish the name of the “unknown man” in the photograph. This was my father – Thomas Kennedy (known as Tom). He sadly passed away in June 2005 at the age of 83. The picture is taken in Riverside Park, Kinlochleven. I presume my dad had arranged a match between the young Oban High School team and a Kinlochleven School team. He also used to do a bit of refereeing in his later football days so he might have been the referee for the match. My father was a well-known footballer in the Lochaber area and was renowned as a prolific goalscorer. I have many stories which were handed down to me from my dad about all the old football teams around this era. At one time there were more than 10 teams in Kinlochleven village alone whilst the aluminium smelter was in full force.’
