After months of Zoom calls, Netflix and being stuck within the M25, the very thought of an off-grid weekend of camping and swimming in Devon was excitement enough. Add in a mixture of friends and like-minded fellow adventurers and anticipation levels were through the roof.

The Ruckraft Retreat is a weekend of wild swimming, hiking and camping built around Above Below’s Ruckraft and a very special woodland camp. The off-grid campsite has been created by Nigel Jenkins, a former British Army Commando and Military Physical Training Instructor and now keen open water swimmer and swimrunner. Nestled in a wood off Dartmoor, he has built an eco-friendly camp where you can really get back to nature for the weekend. Under the trees he has crafted an outdoor kitchen and covered dining area, fire pit (complete with canopy made from a parachute), showers made out of watering cans, compost toilet and a wood-fired hot tub. Oh, and a cold stream to jump and dunk in – and maybe skinny dip!
