THE WINNER IS... CANON RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM

For pro-grade build, all-round performance, image quality and a fast, constant f/2.8 aperture, the RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM is simply the all-time best Canon standard zoom lens... But it’s a very expensive lens and if it’s beyond your means, the new RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM is appealing at about half the weight and price.

For a more expansive zoom range, the RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM is the top option but, again, the downsized RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM is quite compact and inexpensive. The RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is unbeatably small for a full-frsame zoom, if you can do without telephoto reach. For specialist lenses, the weighty RF 28-70mm F2L USM is great for events, while the RF 24-105mm F2.8L IS USM Z is a true hybrid for stills/video. And naturally, the RF-S18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is ideal for APS-C format EOS R System cameras.

CANON STANDARD ZOOMS
Most of us shoot with a standard zoom, most of the time. Here’s your essential guide to all of Canon’s current options for both EOS R System mirrorless cameras and EOS DSLRs
CANON RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM £324/$299
Built for APS-C format EOS R System cameras, this lens has a space-saving retractable design
HOW WE TEST
We combine real-world shooting results with rigorous lab testing to arrive at our overall ratings
CANON RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM £379/$299
This RF zoom is unfeasibly compact and lightweight for a full-frame compatible standard zoom
DISTORTION
It’s a wide spread of results for uncorrected distortion
CANON RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM £2519/$2199
We rate this as Canon’s best ever standard zoom lens, but it doesn’t come cheap
CANON EF-S17-55MM F/2.8 IS USM £939/$879
Old but gold, this APS-C format lens still takes a lot of beating
CANON RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM £479/$399
A compact yet highly versatile zoom, ideal for everyday shooting and even for extreme close-ups
CANON EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM £219/$249
The latest reinvention of Canon’s 18-55mm kit zoom for APS-C format DSLRs is the best yet
CANON RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM £1389/$1299
Probably the best full-frame compatible ‘kit’ zoom lens that Canon has ever made
COLOUR FRINGING
There are a few surprise offenders…
CANON RF 24-105mm F2.8L IS USM Z £3439/$2999
One of Canon’s ‘hybrid’ RF lenses for stills and videography, this one’s not to be taken lightly
CANON EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM £489/$599
It rules the roost of APS-C format kit zoom lenses for telephoto reach
CANON RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM £1249/$1099
An alternative ‘trinity’ standard zoom that’s much more compact, lightweight and inexpensive to buy
CANON EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM £1389/$1299
The Mark II edition is a marked improvement over the original
CANON RF 28-70mm F2L USM £3299/$2899
It’s hefty but this special zoom lens aims to replace four fast-aperture primes!
CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM £1999/$1899
It’s fairly compact for a ‘trinity’ 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom but lacks optical stabilization
