Rather like the country in which it’s situated, Bergen is a hotbed of musical activity. Not only was it a major part of the Norwegian black metal scene that provided plenty of gossip for music magazines in the early 1990s – the notorious Burzum hail from the area and the nearby Fantoft Stave Church was the first of more than 50 historic Norwegian Churches to be burnt down, allegedly by Burzum’s murderous Varg Vikernes, who was charged but found not guilty by jurors (it’s since been completely rebuilt) – more recently it’s prog and jazz rock that are more prevalent. Prog labels Karisma and Apollon are situated here, as are bands such as Wardruna, Shamen Elephant and Seven Impale to name but a few.
