PROGRESSIVE METAL
Dom Lawson buckles up for a delve into the darker, heavier side.
Extreme progressive metal is clearly not for everyone, but Vipassi have at least removed one notable stumbling block for more sensitive listeners. Their long-awaited fulllength debut Lightless (Season Of Mist) is an entirely instrumental affair, wherein rolling waves of elegant post-rock, jolting bursts of technical death metal and lush, cinematic atmospherics collide. Closing epic Promethea is particularly dazzling: an 11-minute prog-death odyssey with a dark ambient underbelly, it sums up this band’s ability to sound like everything all at once, and nothing whatsoever.
