The 90s were a pivotal moment in Peter Hammill’s long career; Van der Graaf Generator were long in the rear-view mirror, and reunions in general still seemed unfashionable. A solo artist for more than two decades, any attempts at ‘pop stardom’ that may have been made in the 80s were also far behind him – it was clear he could never be a megastar like fellow Charisma travellers Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins. As the epitome of a microstar, it was time for Hammill to crack on with his work.
