Browsing through the Royal Society of Literature magazine, I came upon a piece by 17-year-old writer Vincent Otterbeck on ‘Why literature matters’. It came as a bit of a surprise as I am mentoring Vinnie for the Rathbones Folio/First Story mentorship scheme, and he hadn’t told me about it – but then, Vinnie is too modest a guy to mention something as commonplace as writing for the RSL. In the piece, he explains: ‘When you need an escape, that’s what literature offers: it gives you so many places to go.’
